Putting Art into Artefacts
Illustrating archaeological artefacts
Saturday 20th July
10.30am to 3.30pm
Archaeologist, Dr Tim Campbell-Green – Drawing artefacts Photographer, David Heke – Photographing artefacts
Fee: £30 plus the booking fee, includes a buffet lunch. Suitable for ages 16 and over. Advanced booking is essential.
The day will start with a talk about the principles of archaeological representation and will be followed by practical demonstrations and hands on activities in both disciplines. David will show how to photograph artefacts to illustrate their scientific significance and bring out their inherent beauty both using artificial lighting and also out in the field. Tim will discuss the place of pottery drawings in archaeological reports, and why, even in the digital age, they are a vital element of archaeology. He will then teach the skills and techniques needed in order for you to create a finished drawing of pottery recovered from the site. An understanding and practice of the skills required to put art in to artefacts will be gained by the end of the day.
