Stewart Smallwood was raised in Goostrey in the late 1950’s through to the 1970’s. After pursuing a career in hospitality around the globe, Stewart has returned to his ancestral home in the village – a 300 year-old cottage, which he is currently restoring. His family history reveals continuous residence in Goostrey and Blackden since the late 16th Century, with ancestors working as blacksmiths, sextons, gravediggers, church caretakers and shopkeepers. Stewart’s parents were keen local historians and in 2000, they published a book about life in the village entitled ‘Goostrey Remembered’. Stewart has continued the family tradition and is now an archivist for the Goostrey Parish Archive; a member of the Goostrey Gooseberry Society; and a Trustee of The Blackden Trust, whilst continuing to provide expertise in the hospitality sector locally and nationally.
